• Paul McCartney's song 'Yesterday', which was recently voted the most popular song of the century by a BBC poll, had music written before the lyrics. Paul used the working words 'scrambled eggs' before coming up with 'yesterday' while composing this song.

• The song 'strawberry fields forever' is actually two versions of the song mixed together by George Martin. One was a half-tone higher and slightly faster. When it was slowed down it somehow fit together with the other version perfectly. The Beatles liked both versions and couldn't decide on one and asked Martin if he could put them together somehow. When he tried it - it worked!

• The Beatles featured two left handed members, Paul, whom everyone saw holding his Hoffner bass left handed, and Ringo, whose left handedness is at least partially to blame for his 'original' drumming style.

• The Beatles got their name from a line in the movie 'The Wild Ones'. Lee Marvin's character said the motocycle gang wanted Marlon Brando's character back, even the beetles (he was referring to the women in the gang). They changed the 'ee' to 'ea' so it was like the musical term 'beat'

• In a contest held by Mersyside Newspaper to see who was the biggest band in Liverpool, 1962, one of the main reasons that The Beatles won was because they called in posing as different people voting for themselves.

A successful wrap up for this months Salsa Design presence at Boutique Markets at Portside, Hamilton.
With a theme of wild flora and fauna, Salsa design's "Novemred" was a magical explosion of live and inanimate RED plus unique canvas wall art of animals and flora from around the globe.
Ra-ra, the baby elephant was featured on massive square meter gallery style stretched canvas, Also the Australian Coral Tree on its restful landscape designed canvas wall art.
Plenty of Marilyn Monroes pop art frames were up for grabs...
As usual, Salsa Designs resident conceptual artist Alejandro hits the ground running with his "Pretty Red Mess", live animal acrobatics courtesy of "Rafter" the pop art dog and his ball on a rope.

The Illawarra Flame Tree (Brachychiton acerifolius), is a large tree native to subtropical regions on the east coast of Australia. It is famous for the bright red bell-shaped flowers that often cover the whole tree when it is leafless. Along with other members of the Brachychiton genus, it is commonly referred to as a Kurrajong.
This tree is tolerant of temperate climates and is now cultivated world-over for its beauty. However, the maximum height of 40 m is reached only in the original, warmer, habitat. It usually grows to be about 20 m. Similarly to its Kurrajong relatives the leaves are variable, with up to 7 deep lobes. It is deciduous - shedding its leaves after the dry season. The spectacular flowering occurs in late spring and new foliage is ready for the summer rains. In areas where the winter is not particularly dry, this natural rhythm may become somewhat erratic and the tree may flower only partially.
Flowers are scarlet bells with 5 partially fused petals. The pod-like fruits (technically known as follicles) are dark brown, wide, boat-shaped and about 10 cm long. They contain masses of thin bristles that stick in the skin, as well as yellow seeds. These are nutritious and were eaten by Aborigines after toasting.

Abstract art uses a visual language of form, color and line to create a composition which exists independently of what may appear to others as visual realities. Western had been underpinned by the logic of perspective and an attempt to reproduce an illusion of visible reality. It allowed the progressive thinking artists to show a different side to the world around them. By the end of the 19th century many artists felt a need to create a 'new kind of art' which would encompass the fundamental changes taking place in technology, science and philosophy.

Abstract artists created art that was diverse and reflected the social and intellectual turmoil in all areas of Western culture. People that chose abstract art as their preferred artform tend to be visionsaries. They see things in the world around them and in people that others may miss because they look beyond what is visual only with the eye. They rely on their inner thoughts and feelings in dealing with the world around them instead of on what they are told they should think and feel. They feel freed from the tendancy to be bound by traditional thought and experiences. They look more toward their own ideas and experiences than what they are told by their religious upbringing or from scientific evidence. They tend to like to prove theories themselves instead of relying on the insight or ideas of others. They are not bound by common and mundane, but like to travel and have new experiences. They value intelligence, but they also enjoy a challenge. They can be rather argumentative when they are being forced or feel as if they are being forced to conform.

Bougainvillea is a genus of flowering plants native to South America from Brazil west to Peru and south to southern Argentina. The plant was discovered in Brazil in 1768, by Philibert Commerçon, French Botanist accompanying French Navy admiral and explorer Louis Antoine de Bougainville during his voyage of circumnavigation.
They are thorny, woody vines growing anywhere from 1-12 meters tall, scrambling over other plants with their hooked thorns. The thorns are tipped with a black, waxy substance. They are evergreen where rainfall occurs all year, or deciduous if there is a dry season. The leaves are alternate, simple ovate-acuminate, 4-13 cm long and 2-6 cm broad. The actual flower of the plant is small and generally white, but each cluster of three flowers is surrounded by three or six bracts with the bright colors associated with the plant, including pink, magenta, purple, red, orange, white, or yellow. Bougainvillea glabra is sometimes referred to as "paper flower" because the bracts are thin and papery. The fruit is a narrow five-lobed achene.

Bougainvilleas are popular ornamental plants in most areas with warm climates, including Aruba, the Philippines, Thailand, Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Vietnam, Malaysia, Australia, Singapore, the Mediterranean region, the Caribbean, Mexico, South Africa, Kuwait,and the United States in Arizona, California, Florida, Hawaii, Louisiana, South Carolina, and southern Texas.

Numerous cultivars and hybrids have been selected, including nearly thornless shrubs. Some Bougainvillea cultivars are sterile, and are propagated from cuttings.

Bougainvillea are rapid growing and flower all year in warm climates, especially when pinched or pruned. They grow best in moist fertile soil. Bloom cycles are typically four to six weeks. Bougainvillea grow best in very bright full sun and with frequent fertilization, but the plant requires little water to flower. As indoor houseplants in temperate regions, they can be kept small by bonsai techniques. If overwatered, Bougainvillea will not flower and may lose leaves or wilt, or even die from root decay.

Eugene Kornman is most well-known for one of his 1953 stills for the movie Niagara. This still featured a young Marilyn Monroe and was used as the basis for Andy Warhol's series of "Marilyn's" that began in 1962 following her suicide.
After Marilyn's suicide, the self-styled Pop Art superstar Andy Warhol (who was also a photographer) "used" Korman's image—I have no idea if he paid Korman or his estate for its use, or even asked for permission—to "mass-produce" (Warhol's term) an ever-changing series of silkscreens. They had numerous different combinations of fauvist-style patches of wild color over a simplified Kodalith of Monroe's face, copied, of course, from Korman's photograph. They are shown and sold as either individual silkscreens (one of which, known as "Orange Marilyn," sold for $17.3 million in 1998, which a Sotheby's spokesman called "a wise buy at the price") or as "paintings" composed of a number of the silkscreens (from two up to at least 50) grouped together.

Erythrina x sykesii (coral tree) is a fast-growing deciduous tree with large trefoil leaves and brilliant scarlet flowers produced before the leaves at the start of winter. Often planted, it will grow from broken branches and can be found along river edges between Perth and Bunbury. Originally from India, the most usually planted form is a garden hybrid.
